Whats in a MOOC Part I

It’s autumn, and for many people the change of seasons brings on a pavlovian desire to be in school. Fortunately for those people, we live in fantastic times. Many of the world’s top schools are actually giving away a little piece of education via the Internet. These classes, called MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses), are distributed by companies such as Coursera and NovoEd (Udacity, my current favorite, has a slightly different model), who work with top-tier institutions to create the video lectures and online quizzes that are ultimately consumed by the learning-starved masses. So what’s it like to actually take one? I have now personally participated in many MOOCs, with varying levels of commitment and completion. I have some very specific thoughts and analyses of this trend, but that will have to wait for another time. Right now, I really just want to tell you, the MOOC novice, what it’s like to be a MOOC student. Day One:   Excitement! Hurray, it’s finally the first day of the class I registered for weeks ago! I can’t wait to dig into the material and get started! Why can’t I login? That’s strange; the class isn’t available yet. Is something wrong? I got an email reminder just yesterday. I’ll re-read that, maybe I wrote it down wrong†¦nope, it’s today, at†¦10pm  Pacific Time? Oh. (Checking clock). Sigh. I guess I’ll get started tomorrow, then. No way I’m watching a lecture tonight. Day Two: Finally! Here we go†¦oh. Week 1. What we’re going to cover: â€Å"Why the professor is doing the course†; â€Å"How to earn a certificate of completion†; â€Å"The school doesn’t make any representation about the value of the course or actual learning†Ã¢â‚¬â€ blah, blah, blah. Okay, so the real lectures start†¦at 10pm Pacific Time a week from yesterday. Can’t wait. Maybe I’m being a little harsh. That’s not always how it goes, just often enough that any MOOC-takers out there probably chuckled in recognition. I’ll spare you the running diary from here on out. I’m sure you’re much more interested in what the lectures are like and what it’s really like to be a student in one of these â€Å"classes†. Generally speaking, they are a lot like college lecture courses. That is, a professor talks a lot and gives reading assignments. The video lectures are interrupted by â€Å"pop quizzes† to check if you are actually learning anything. It’s a pretty passive learning experience for the most part. If you look back at high school or college and remember that you were really bored in lecture-style classes, then be forewarned: MOOCs are  not  for the faintly motivated. When you’re in school, you generally know that on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30am, for example, you have to show up to get your regularly scheduled dose of instruction. When you’re in a MOOC, you have to show up for class†¦before the deadline. Usually a week after the lecture was posted. So there’s a lot of time and self-management required, which means you need to be really, really interested in the topic or really motivated to get that certificate of completion. Even if it’s meaningless to potential employers. There’s also a lot of reading. Usually, there’s some sort of text to go with the class, but in my experience, the assigned reading is pretty light. What is really time consuming is reading through all the posts associated with the class. In an attempt to create student engagement on the subject at hand, many classes now require that you participate in an online class forum. If you’ve participated in these before, you know there’s a lot of noise through which you have to filter. Anyone who’s logged onto Facebook â€Å"for a few minutes† usually discovers that it’s pretty easy to kill a couple of hours a night sifting through topics, and posting or replying to the ones in which you’re interested. Most of the MOOCs I’ve taken have less than three hours of lectures a week. So the class forums can actually take up more of your time than the course lectures, if you let them. And there are TAs monitoring forum activity. The penalty for not participating? Your certificate level is downgraded, which goes on your â€Å"permanent record†. In my next post I’ll discuss what it’s like to actually engage with fellow MOOC students, grade peers’ assignments—a big part of the MOOC model—and whether or not I’d take a MOOC again. Stay tuned! South Africa a Development and Economic Overview - 2383 Words

South Africa A Development and Economic Overview Introduction I chose South Africa as the topic for this research paper. I have always wanted to visit South Africa but have never had the opportunity to travel there. My involvement in international development has given me an interest in this country, as it has many ties to the developing world and the history of developing countries through colonialism. South Africa is influenced by all levels of economic activity including the primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary and quinary sectors which determine if South Africa’s commercial economy. These economic levels, along with the indicators of development, show whether or not South Africa is a developed nation and if so, how†¦show more content†¦The city of Cape Town remains today a city of commercial trade, as trade is conducted through the port in Cape Town to other countries around the world (Economy, 2011). Although many people in South Africa still rely on subsistence agriculture to live, the majority of the Sout h African economy is commercial. They have a plentiful supply of natural resources, which enable them to process those resources and trade them with the rest of the world in the free trade market (South Africa, 2011). In 1948, South Africa faced many problems as a policy of apartheid was implemented by the elected National Party (South Africa, 2011). This meant that there was a separate development of the African Americans and Caucasians, which favored the Caucasian minority (Comaroff, 1997). The apartheid caused many economic problems such as poverty, a lack of public transportation and â€Å"a lack of economic empowerment among the disadvantaged groups† (South Africa, 2011). South Africa’s economy also suffered major blows in 2007, when there was an electricity crisis, and in 2009, from the global financial crisis. During this time South African GDP dropped 2 % (South Africa, 2011). This being said, the South African stock exchange remains strong and is now the 18th largest in the world (South Africa, 2011). How Gender Can Make A Visual Statement And Representation...

This essay will examine how gender can make a visual statement and representation of ones identity. Gender identity is a personal conception on ones self as either male or female or possibly both or neither. Gender diversity (2016) â€Å"Unlike biological sex—which is assigned at birth and based on physical characteristics—gender identity refers to a person’s innate, deeply felt sense of being male or female (sometimes even both or neither). While it is most common for a person’s gender identity to align with their biological sex, this is not always the case. A person’s gender identity can be different from their biological sex†. In relation to fashion, gender identity can come out of the norm, the stereotype of what a woman or a male should wear and what is socially acceptable, although this has changed over time .For example it is now more socially acceptable for a female to wear trousers where as in the earlier days it was seen as unfeminine. Going back to gender there is an identity that is referred to as gender fluid. Gender fluidity is an identity that refers to a gender that changes over time; this could be random or could change in response to a circumstance. A gender fluid person can possibly identify at any time as male, female or Neutrois.com (2016) neutrois, which is considered to be neutral or null gender. Legalization of all drugs Essay Example For Students

Legalization of all drugs Essay Legalize Drugs! I know what youre thinking, are you crazy! The debate over the legalization of drugs continues to disturb the American public. Such an issue stirs up moral and religious beliefs, beliefs that are contrary to what Americans should believe. I ask all of you to please keep an open mind and hear me out on this very controversial subject. All of us have in some way or another been affected by drug, whether it is a family member or the economic burden on society. Americans often take at face value the assumptions that drugs cause addiction, which leads to crime. This is true but abundant evidence exists to support the view that legalizing illicit drugs can help solve the drug problem in America. There is not a way to stop drug use, however there are two ways to combat the problem, like we have been or to legalize them, the legalization of drugs would help the United States in the areas of crime, increase revenue, elevate over-crowed prisons and decelerate the use of drugs in American society. There is one fact society agrees on: drugs are everywhere in America. The so-called War on drugs has taken over the streets, back alleys, and the suburbs of America. It has caused a problem that mirrors the prohibition days of the 1920s and early 1930s. A Fact that alcohol prohibition did fail and the prohibition on drugs is not only doomed to fail but it has already failed miserably. It has created more of a social cost than if there was never a War on drugs. The anit-drug policies have created an underground drug-trade, in which modern drug-dealers have taken the place of the bootleggers of the prohibition age. The fabled War on Drugs has not made even a dent in the problem, even though we arrest people and we stuff them into prisons as fast as we can build them. If one thinks otherwise, just look in newspapers and you will see that this war has failed miserably. To understand why prohibitions are doomed to fail one must look at the main reason: money. As long as there is someone out there that wants a product and is willing to any price for that product, there will always be someone to supply the product, for the right price of course, we call him or her the Pusher. And there is where the problem lies, it does not matter if the product is legal or illegal there is money to be made and someone is going to make it. Who would not take advantage of this opportunity to make a few thousand dollars supplying drugs to the addicts that are already out there? Why would an inner-city youth degrade themselves by working for five dollars an hour at McDonalds? While some of his peers are standing on a corner, selling drugs for a couple of hundred dollars an hour. So you risk going to jail. Unfortunately jail for some people is better than living in the conditions, which they live in now. The slick young pushers are the new role models for todays youth. They are wearing designer clothes and are driving the new $50,000 cars. They are being seen everyday with a smug smile that tells the younger children that drugs pay. One way to combat the problem is to go after the pusher: arrest them and toss them in jail. This is the approach we use today but it is not an effective one. This is because people will do anything and use all their intellect to avoid arrest. A Passionate Deteriorating Mother Essay But it is important to understand that we have so many addicts today because pushers are doing their jobs quite well: pushing drugs on people who otherwise would not likely use them. They glamorize the drugs, give them away free, show people a good time, and hook a significant percentage of their customers. Without the financial incentives, pushers will be a thing of the past. Without pushers, society has a better chance of helping people through drug addiction. It can also minimize the financial hazards of drug addiction. The reasons why drugs are so expensive is because it is a great risk to manufacture, smuggle, and sell them, so the price in turn goes up. If drugs were legal they could be produced by big manufactures. Like Miller Corporation produces alcohol after the repeal of the prohibition. The manufactures could produce them at a very low price. Just like alcohol the government would tax the drugs and have money for education about them.Addicts would not have to rob, mug or kill to get drugs. Like alcohol, you do not hear of an alcoholic killing someone over a beer. This would cause drug related crimes to decrease rapidly. Of course if drugs were legal there would have to be restrictions on them. It would presumably also diminish the damage caused by the absents of quality controls on illicit drugs and slow the spread of infectious diseases due to needle sharing and other unhygienic practices. We would only be allowed to use them in certain designated areas, and a minor would not be allowed to use them, just like alcohol. The government would have to make up the restrictions. Places of employment would restrict them if they choose too. In conclusion Americans have a difficult decision to make. We all know that there is no way to stop drug use. There are two ways to combat the problem; one like we have been doing and failing or two to legalize them. We have to ask if it is ones right to use drugs if he or she wants to? Americans today are facing the same problem with drugs as the Americans of the 1920s and 1930s faced with alcohol. Until Drugs are legalized we will still have the pusher. We are losing many people to falsified war on drugs. There is not a way to stop drug use, it has crated an underground trade, and people are dieing for it every day, the legalization of drugs would help the United States in revenue, elevate over-crowed prisons and reduce the drug problem that is present in our society. But in America today people will continue to die of drug related crime because of the people that take the issues at face value. They do not look into the problem at hand they only look at the notion that drugs are bad for you. But is not it true that alcohol and cigarettes are bad for you? The government leaves that choice up to you, whether to engage in that legal activity. If an American wants to do something that has heath risk, is it not his or her choice to do so set forth by the constitution? The reason why this country is like it is today is because of freedom, freedom to do and choose anything we want to do, as long as it doesnt infringe on the rights of others. Should not we as Americans have the right to choose what we want to do? All I ask is that you please keep an open mind about this issue do your own reach and then make your decision.Words/ Pages : 1,991 / 24

IT Stakeholder Engagement in comparative Effectiveness †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the IT Stakeholder Engagement. Answer: Introduction: The stakeholder engagement is the method in which people are involved in any organization. They are affected through the decision makings (Wilhite and Pyrz 2017). Every deliverables of the project are undermined in those fields that contain deficient stakeholder commitment. The potential stakeholders are required to be understood and studied at the University of South Australia. The paper discusses the strategies of the important sections identified. In addition to the conclusion, recommendations are made with action scheduling. The identified strategies: The engaging of stakeholders at the University of South Australia has been a continuous evolving practice. It has concluded with some queries about the stakeholder engagement in the future (Henisz, Dorobantu and Nartey 2014). The cloud tools has originated as a rising cost-effective and credible solution for every problem. The University of South Australia has been interacting huge quantities of the other entities. Now, the question arises here is that how could compete requests could be incorporated in an overall cohesive strategy. The quantity and diversities of the groups of stakeholders has been a huge challenge for the university. The cloud-work-spaces have made it simpler to control the activities of stakeholders. This is done by delivering a core hub for every announcements, consultations and conversation exercises (MacLennan et al. 2017). By collaborating with the clouds, the organizations do not require to choose various instruments or channels of communication for engaging in various groups. On the other hand, they are able to build particular spaces for work for specific issues or projects. They are further able to send invitation the necessary people or groups for giving contribution when needed. Thus the load to collaborate with huge space with a huge scale of stakeholders could be highly reduced (Cooper, Parkes and Blewitt 2014). However, each activity has been retaining their purpose and focuses. The next query arises regarding the capturing of data streaming in the university. Further the distillation of the data to the node trends and developing planning around them are to be determined. Each of the cloud collaborations do not possess tools to have the analysis of built-in data and functions reporting. These have been best suited for the stakeholders engagement activities. This is due to the fact they have been enabling the users in shaping and refining the strategies of engagement. These have been lying on the basis on the information built through each interaction. Reports should be created by organizing that information in graph and other forms. This indicates that the information collected from the stakeholders utilizing the questionnaires within the instrument could be assessed and then formatted for the presentation in this instrument (Cote and Osborne 2017). Hence, there has been no requirement for any distinct reporting software. The capturing of data and reporting of functions has also made it linear to control the usage patterns, So it could be clearly seen when and how the stakeholders have been interacting with the working space. The stakeholders possess the ways to challenge the strategies almost in an instant manner. Further the last query arises regarding the managing the strategy in that dynamic environment. The clod has been providing scopes for the organizations to become agile. This has helped in moving quickly and responding immediately as latest problems arise. Thats why the cloud computing has been useful for the organizations for supporting the plans of stakeholder engagement (Concannon et al. 2014). They have been aware that extra resources would be available in the clouds just after the project priorities alter. This could also occur as any unexpected spike in the demand take places. The online workplaces have been largely adaptable due to the fact they have been designed to back-up the agile organizations. This indicates that they have been created to suit the call of the fast-changing and the dynamic environments of working. The users could be deploy and repurpose the cloud workplaces very fast. This is done as a move for the project going by various phases. This is done instead of installing ad selecting and training people to utilize various instances of software every time (Padayachee, Naidu and Waspe 2015). For instance a common procurement exercise could be taken as the example. A huge range of the stakeholders has been likely been included. Everybody should have various interest levels. They should influence and engage according to the stages of their project. The online workplaces could bring the stakeholders altogether. They could also strongly manage permission to access. This leads in assuring that no private and secret information has been shared in any place where it has not been expected (Osman et al. 2016). However, there is no necessity to reapply or replicate the precautions of security around various channels and platforms. The bidders at the first phase of the workplace could be reutilized to any shared zone for negotiations at final contract. This is to be again applied to the area of project management or the client portal for supporting delivery. As the stakeholder engagement project is started the map for the stakeholders are to be drawn. This should display the groups to collaborate with, consult and inform. This must be based on the effective levels of interests and influence. The first group comprises of the group to be informed with minimum effort. The techniques to maximize the awareness among the stakeholders in this case are using of the public web pages, RSS feeds, YouTube channel, Twitter, Facebook and other social media and lastly the quick polls (Bonsn and Ratkai 2013). The next group is those who must be consulted and shown the consideration for the views. The channels allowing collecting and quickly assessing feedbacks from any quantity of stakeholders in minimum cost are the online surveys and ideation. It also includes formal consultations, discussion forums, and discussion forums. The third group comprises of those are been collaborated for close partnerships. The object here is to inform, then consult and then collaborate. The effective relationships for working with the primary stakeholders groups are securing the file-sharing workplaces, team management and task management. The sharing of team diaries, wikis, documenting the co-authoring a nd risk registering could be also done. The last group is those who are meant for engaging and keeping satisfied. There objective is to informing and consulting. This category of stakeholders could become very powerful influencers (Rinaldi, Unerman and Tilt 2014). However, the using of digital techniques and channels are required as they have very low interest potentially. The methods are meant to target the messages such that they deliver address and contexts particular issues that have been interesting them. The techniques include the issue registering, reviewing of document, and alerting the targets, updating data, links to the articles, project blogs and stakeholder database. Recommendations and the action plan: As some overlaps are found, some categories of pathways would help in engaging with the stakeholders in few ways. Through the understanding the categories it becomes easier to make choice of the software packages to provide the digital ways required. A closer look at them is recommended below: The recommendations: Channels of Social media: They are free in using and could be controlled from their individual sites. A wide range of the third-party software could be used to manage the accounts. Publishing platforms: The popular and common options for the blogs and websites consist of plenty of free software. They also have the RSS feeds created in them. There have been numerous proprietary solutions that could be adjusted according to requirements. File sharing: It is a simple approach to exchange spreadsheets, images and documents. As any sharing of file needed with the stakeholders, on the basis if different locations, a cloud-based solution of file sharing is recommended (Gesell et al. 2017). Consultative channels: There are many ways that enables to counsel with partners, including the web overviews, authority e-interview programming, discourse gatherings, surveys and so on. The Action plan: The feedback of community on the measure of mitigation would be reviewed for better understanding of the problems. The feedback should be further investigated by discussing with the stakeholders. The feedback must also go through the analysis of technical monitoring, data collection and field investigations (Roberts et al. 2017). After following the investigations, recommendations are to be made to the manager about the proper action course. As required, the action plans could be upgraded and then communicated with the university staffs to implement. Conclusion: It has become a cult for the organizations to compete that to tick the box rather than to endeavor the understanding of stakeholder engagement. The stakeholder management also put impact on the decision implementation. The engagement of stakeholders is a crucial functionality for the project managers. The managers charged by the stakeholder management have been feeling pressure in dealing with this. The digital channels have brought important advantages for the stakeholder engagement. This has permitted the organizations in consulting, informing, engaging and collaborating in variety of ways. Once the basis of the stakeholder engagement is mastered, it is crucial to make appreciation of the ever-altering characteristics of the practice. References: Bonsn, E. and Ratkai, M., 2013.
